Proverbs 4:23-27 (MSG) Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts. Don't talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.
The book of Proverbs is all about giving wisdom and practical instruction for Godly living. This scripture paints a picture of what a Godly life looks like and reveals its canvas is the heart. No matter how talented an artist may be, if he begins his great work on a torn canvas, the oils may cover it initially, but eventually the cracks of the canvas will show through. A canvas that has a spotty or bumpy surface will alter the texture of the painting, skewing the original intent of the artist. What have you allowed to alter the canvas of your heart? Is it ripped from wanting to follow Jesus completely, but being held back by life issues that take priority? Are there bumps, frays and holes of bitterness from past hurts that keep you from moving forward? Have you allowed negative thoughts and/or circumstances stain your faith, altering the vivid colors He wants to paint through your life? Your heart is the canvas of your soul. Keep it pure so the Master can paint the great work He had in mind when He created you!
Father, Forgive me for limiting Your ability to create a masterpiece in me. Reveal the areas where I allow my heart to keep You from Your work. Give me the courage, wisdom and strength to let the blood of Jesus renew my heart and clean the canvas daily so Your work can be seen through me. I love You! Amen
